Why the U.S. Can’t Get Israel to Break Up With China
For most Israelis, the deals are enticing and the threat seems remote.

Yes—as a hypothetical, that is possible, and there is a real strategic basis for the question. But it would be a major shift, and Weichert's argument by itself does not establish that Israel would actually make that choice.
The important point is that Israel already has reasons to cooperate with China economically while remaining closely aligned with the United States militarily. Analysts have described Israel as balancing these two relationships for years.
If Weichert's thesis is correct
Suppose his argument is:
The Ukraine war weakens Russia and the United States, while China emerges relatively stronger.
Then the next question is whether Israel's interests could eventually diverge from Washington's.
In principle, yes. States don't have permanent interests in another country's policy; they have their own security and economic interests.
For example, Israel could theoretically conclude that China offers:
- greater access to Asian markets;
- infrastructure and investment;
- diplomatic channels with countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia;
- technological or economic opportunities;
- a useful relationship with an increasingly important great power.
That could create pressure for Israel to maintain closer relations with Beijing even when Washington wanted Israel to distance itself from China.
And this isn't merely hypothetical in one sense: Israel has already had to navigate U.S. pressure over Chinese involvement in Israeli infrastructure and technology. U.S. objections contributed to the cancellation of Israel's Phalcon aircraft sale to China in 2000 and later affected Israel's handling of Chinese military equipment.
But there's a very important counterweight
Israel's security dependence on the United States is enormous.
The Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) states that the United States is “without question” Israel's most important ally, noting Israel's dependence on U.S. weapons systems, American military assistance, and U.S. diplomatic and military support. It also concludes that Israel has an interest in maintaining American influence in the Middle East.
And China's interests don't necessarily line up with Israel's. The same INSS analysis notes that China is an important economic partner but is also a major partner of Iran, Israel's principal regional adversary.
So Israel could face something like:
Economic interest:
China ↑
Security dependence:
United States ↑
Chinese relationship with Iran:
Potentially against Israeli interests
That makes a complete Israeli pivot toward China considerably more difficult.
Where your hypothesis becomes interesting
There is a plausible middle position:
Israel doesn't become a Chinese ally. Instead, Israel becomes more strategically autonomous.
It might say:
“We remain allied with America for defense, but we will maintain substantial economic and diplomatic relations with China regardless of Washington's preferences.”
That is much more plausible than Israel suddenly replacing Washington with Beijing.
Indeed, a recent INSS assessment recommends essentially that type of arrangement: maintain the strategic alliance with the U.S. while maintaining controlled, constructive economic relations with China. It specifically says there is currently no substitute for the U.S.-Israeli strategic relationship.
And this bears directly on Wauck's argument
This is where I would separate Wauck's interpretation from the underlying facts.
Wauck's argument seems to assume:
U.S. + Israel = one geopolitical bloc → China is the ultimate opponent → therefore Israel's conflict with China is intrinsic to Israel's interests.
But that's not necessarily true.
Israel has its own national interests, and those interests don't have to coincide perfectly with Washington's. In fact, Weichert himself recently emphasized that Israel has “their own agenda, as all countries do,” while discussing the increasing institutional integration of the U.S. and Israeli defense sectors.
So your hypothetical is legitimate:
If China's power continued to rise, America's relative position declined, and China became increasingly important to Israel economically and diplomatically, Israel could face increasing incentives to pursue a more independent China policy—even if that created friction with Washington.
But that would be strategic hedging, not necessarily a China alliance.
And interestingly, China's increasingly negative stance toward Israel since October 7 has itself made that possibility harder, according to recent Israeli analysis.
So the strongest version of the hypothesis is “Israel could eventually diverge from Washington on China,” not “Israel will become China's ally.”
