Below is also an interesting discussion on the above and the "Synod of Popes" in The Catholic Monitor comment section: Comments T said… As far as I know no pope can be a formal heretic or teach formal heresy. A council defined the “gates of hell” as the death dealing tongues of heretics. If the pope is the rock that keeps the gates of hell from prevailing, then clearly the pope and heresy are mutually exclusive. This is long before the definition of papal infallibility.
