OPEN LETTER TO BISHOP STRICKLAND

Bishop Strickland: Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary

In a recent podcast at LifeSite, Bishop Strickland takes the lyrics, "Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary" as the point of departure for his reflections.  The meditation he offers, however, must be measured against his own decision to glorify tyranny when he was uncanonically removed from Tyler, Texas.  While countless saints have endured mistreatment by injustice, their witness serves the Church by offering an unflinching counter-example.  These martyrs (in the literal or etymological sense of the term) may not have been able to avert an ungodly outcome, but they--like Our Lord Himself--did not submit in the sense of offering the abuse their personal stamp of approval.

For all his devout words, the fact remains that Bishop Strickland has done exactly that.  While many orthodox clerics (and more by the day, it would seem) have been outrageously ousted, this one stands out for having drained his sacrifice of the power of giving witness.  Those who have spoken against uncanonical lawlessness, like those who have elected, in the interest of minimizing damage to others, to hold their tongues, cannot be compared with Bishop Strickland, who immediately took to the public square in order to dignify his own removal with the undeserved name of "obedience."

 

Obedience to whom?  God, or man?  It is as though Our Lord, sentenced to death by Pilate, instead of challenging Pilate or refraining to be drawn into a dead end, had shrugged His shoulders and sighed, "Well, I guess I really am a traitor to Rome--the ultimate power in the universe--after all!  I give up!"

Now that Robert Prevost, who we know was instrumental in bringing about Bishop Strickland's  removal specifically, has become Leo XIV, the damage done by Bishop Strickland's bad example is being amplified.  Instead of checking the uncanonical lawlessness engulfing us on every side, Bishop Strickland continues to justify the depredations implicitly.  To state that his own situation is unCatholic and unacceptable would offer sanctuary to those being comparably manhandled, but he chooses to gather to himself human accolades on the basis of a false, Bergoglian "humility" instead.  

True humility would insist that  every knee shall bend, including Robert Prevost's own.
