Is Feser a Thomist or a Practical Kantian who promotes Categorical Imperative "universalist language [that] is incompatible with the more prudential approaches to public life articulated by... Aquinas"?
- The Categorical Imperative Surfaces
In his must-read Christian Faith and Modern Democracy, Robert Kraynak introduces us to the concept of “Kantian Christianity.” [1] Kraynak claims that the “Kantian influence on modern Christianity is … deep and pervasive.” What he means is that Christian thinkers no longer speak about culture and politics in terms of the more enduring principles of moral virtue, law, and the common good but now focus on social justice, understood as solely the immediate, material rights and dignity of the human person. Moreover, they have drastically reduced the role of prudence in politics accepted under the historical Christian anthropological understanding, which has recognized a variety of political regimes depending on the circumstances...
... Following Kraynak, it is clear to see that in our public life and culture, this language of rights and dignity tends to lead to absolutes in morality, or “categorical imperatives.” Now, Christianity has no problem with moral absolutes (and in fact dictates several), provided they are properly stated. But a proper statement of a moral absolute is made difficult by the anthropology lingering in Kant’s legacy.
Kant’s original categorical imperative, of course, states that one must live in such a manner that one’s actions could form the basis of a universal law. It is the quest for “universal laws,” exclusive of a prudent account of circumstance, that proves troubling. This universalist language is incompatible with the more prudential approaches to public life articulated by Augustine and Aquinas, which was driven by their much richer understandings of the human person and his or her relation to the physical world and the divine. - Douglas A. We’re willing to burn down our own house in order to punish the squatters we can’t evict. We’ll let it all crash and burn to keep our “dignity” intact. That will teach Donald Trump a lesson, won’t it?
- If they vote for Trump and he wins, they send the message that the Party’s position on abortion is secondary to other issues and that the Party can take their votes for granted even without a commitment to life, something Feser argues “would likely do positive harm, indeed grave and lasting damage, to the pro-life cause going forward and to social conservatism in general.” But if they don’t vote for Trump, they make it easier for the far more extreme Democrats to win, thereby consciously contributing to a greater evil. So, what’s a Catholic to do?
Feser answers the question by first outlining the gravity of the betrayal by Trump, arguing against the theory that it’s nothing more than political expediency...
...In short, where our vote will make a difference in the outcome, we must vote for the lesser of two evils, but we must not do so without loudly voicing our opposition to the evil the Party stands for. Otherwise, we are complicit in that evil. Feser is adamant that voting for the lesser of two evils does not satisfy our moral duty: we must also make our protest of the evil known. To not do so would give scandal. - Barbara Farrah [https://crisismagazine.com/opinion/donald-trump-and-the-sovereign-rights-of-god]
- Kant's Universalism: Kantian ethics emphasizes the categorical imperative, requiring individuals to act according to rules that could be applied universally without contradiction. This means judging actions based on their inherent morality, regardless of the specific context or people involved.
Casuistry's Contextualism: In contrast, [the enemy of Jansenist Calvinist-like rigorism St. Alphonsus's] casuistry prioritizes examining the specific details and nuances of a situation to determine the most morally appropriate action. It draws on historical precedents, legal reasoning, and practical wisdom to navigate complex moral dilemmas. - Google AI Overview
- The author refers to a Catholic casuistry best exemplified by St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori (1696-1787)... The author explains that casuistry was pushed to the background by the early twentieth century when the [modern Vatican II] Catholic Church embraced a rigid neo-[apparently Kantian] Thomism and mainstream Protestantism had similarly embraced the liberal philosophies of John Locke and Adam Smith, or “retreated into the austere rigorism of a [Jansenist] puritanical Calvinism.” - Robert Cheeks [https://calitreview.com/the-morality-of-everyday-life-by-thomas-fleming/]
- Francis's primary focus on only earthly [Kantian] human dignity, it appears, could be a form of practical atheism...... This form of practical atheism has brought about the Francis's seamless garment teachings which we will see appears to be a form of Kantian practical atheism. - The Catholic Monitor, Is Francis a Seamless Garment Practical Atheist?
Might philosopher Dr. Edward Feser unwittingly be a practical Kantian as Francis seemingly may be a seamless garment Kantian practical atheist? [Is Francis a Seamless garment Practical Atheist?: https://www.thecatholicmonitor.com/2021/03/is-francis-seamless-garment-practical.html]
Dr. Feser is supposed to be an old school Thomist and not an apparent practical Kantian, but lately it has appeared that he may have more in common with Kant's philosophy and Jansenist Calvinist-like rigorism than Catholic "casuistry... [which includes] practitioners... [like] Aristotle, Cicero and St. Thomas" as well as St. Alphonsus according to scholar Thomas Fleming.
The scholar says that modern philosophers like "Kant to Kohlberg" and "Descartes or Locke" disregard a father's love as well as "a mother's self-sacrificing love for her children as beneath the level of... duties of citizenship or claims of humanity" such as universal "cause[s]" and "social conservatism in general.”
These philosophers "looked at the everyday world and saw nothing but a few universal rules reducible to a mathematical formula, Aristotle and the writers of the Old Testament discerned an intricate network of peculiar obligations arising from specific circumstances and experiences."
Fleming's "The Morality of Everyday Life," shows how a mother's love for the good of her family is not below the Kantian Categorical Imperative of purely abstract, universal principles like those espoused by Immanuel Kant highlighting how such principles can sometimes clash with the concrete realities of motherly love and the needs of her husband and children as well as the need to live in a non-tyrannical country while fulfilling the “'obligation' to vote for the lesser of two evil."
It appears that Feser may implicitly think or a least in practice promote the idea that the Kantian Categorical Imperative of abstract formulas is the most important principle for voting unlike the simple family man who wrote the following:
The Democrats are not just the godless Party of evil. They are the godless totalitarian Party of compelled evil - participation is mandatory, not voluntary.
They are changing the basic rules of governance, shredding the Constitution and imposing a tyranny by fiat. There is no opt-out in the future Bolshevik States of America. Civic rules and morals is whatever they say it is and all must agree in thought, word and deed.
Christians who refuse to support the “flawed” Party over the “evil” Party are tacitly accepting this impending revolution of Bolshevik tyrannical evil.
As has been seen by some commenters on this blog … many Christians are doing just that -

This is a terrible mistake of prudential judgement - and perhaps fatal. [https://lesfemmes-thetruth.blogspot.com/2024/10/vote-for-party-that-inflicts-lesser.html]
Pray an Our Father now for reparation for the sins committed because of Francis’s Amoris Laetitia.
Pray an Our Father now for the restoration of the Church as well as the Triumph of the Kingdom of the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Stop for a moment of silence, ask Jesus Christ what He wants you to do now and next. In this silence remember God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Three Divine Persons yet One God, has an ordered universe where you can know truth and falsehood as well as never forget that He wants you to have eternal happiness with Him as his son or daughter by grace. Make this a practice. By doing this you are doing more good than reading anything here or anywhere else on the Internet.
Francis Notes:
– Doctor of the Church St. Francis de Sales totally confirmed beyond any doubt the possibility of a heretical pope and what must be done by the Church in such a situation:
“[T]he Pope… WHEN he is EXPLICITLY a heretic, he falls ipso facto from his dignity and out of the Church, and the Church MUST either deprive him, or, as some say, declare him deprived, of his Apostolic See.”
(The Catholic Controversy, by St. Francis de Sales, Pages 305-306)
Saint Robert Bellarmine, also, said “the Pope heretic is not deposed ipso facto, but must be declared deposed by the Church.”
