The case is not merely a personal opinion, for, as an academic professor I knew said, "my opinion is worth nothing." He taught everything according to the academic teachings, it was nothing coming from him personally, so there was a credibility in the students about his teaching. Even the saints can be mistaken with opinions, in the example of the two saints quoted in the post with opposite opinions, although both maintain good faith. What led St. Bernard was a logical and rational institution to seek a canonical question of an apostolic rule of election of the legitimate Roman Pontiff prior to discerning and finding the truth.
