Brother Bugnolo addresses the question, assuming the resignation to have been invalid, of what happens when there is no conclave of cardinals within the time limit prescribed by canon law after the death of a reigning pontiff. He concludes that the election reverts to a form of acclamation by the citizens of Rome or something to that effect.
