Francis vs. Saint Pope Pius X on Mary being Co-Redemptrix & does Francis even believe in Redemption?
"We are then, it will be seen, very far from attributing to the Mother of God a productive power of grace - a power which belongs to God alone. Yet, since Mary carries it over all in holiness and union with Jesus Christ, and has been associated by Jesus Christ in the work of redemption, she merits for us de congruo, in the language of theologians, what Jesus Christ merits for us de condigno, and she is the supreme Minister of the distribution of graces." - Saint Pope Pius X
Is anyone surprised that Francis doesn't believe that Mary is the Co-Redemptrix?
Might Francis and Saint Pope Pius X disagree on Mary being the Co-Redemptrix?
But, a better question is:
Why would Francis believe Mary is the Co-Redemptrix if he according to Pope John Paul II apparently may "reject... Redemption"?
Before we get to the second question and third question, lets use Wikipedia to understand what we are talking about:
Co-Redemptrix refers to a subordinate but essential participation by the Blessed Virgin Mary in redemption, notably that she gave free consent to give life to the Redeemer, which meant sharing his life, suffering, and death, which were redemptive for the world. Related to this belief is the concept of Mary as Mediatrix, which is a separate concept but regularly included by Catholics who use the title Co-Redemptrix...
... In his encyclical on the Immaculate Conception, Ad diem illum, Pope Pius X said, "...since Mary carries it over all in holiness and union with Jesus Christ, and has been associated by Jesus Christ in the work of redemption, she merits for us de congruo, in the language of theologians, what Jesus Christ merits for us de condigno." [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Co-Redemptrix]
Now, we get to the third question:
Why would Francis believe Mary is the Co-Redemptrix if he according to Pope John Paul II apparently may "reject... Redemption"?
Francis's Amoris Laetitia theology of conscience as the supreme tribunal can, to some extent, be summed up as promoting "the person who claims to have a 'right' to persist in evil-in any sin at all-and who thus rejects Redemption... as it were an impenetrability of conscience."
Many who follow Amoris Laetitia may apparently be rejecting Redemption.
Catholics
who are open to the redefinition of “mercy” to mean the conscience is
the supreme tribunal may cease to be Christians because they deny that
the Incarnate God-man Jesus Christ died to save us from our sin. The
conscience as supreme tribunal denies mercy because if there is no
objective sin to be forgiven and one doesn’t have by grace the power to
overcome sin then the cross of Christ is emptied of its power.
Pope John Paul II in DOMINUM ET VIVIFICANTEM On the Holy Spirit in the Life of the Church
and the World said:
"Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, then, is the sin committed by the person who claims to have a 'right' to persist in evil-in any sin at all-and who thus rejects Redemption.
One closes oneself up in sin, thus making impossible one's conversion,
and consequently the remission of sins, which one considers not
essential or not important for one's life. This is a state of spiritual
ruin, because blasphemy against the Holy Spirit does not allow one to
escape from one's self-imposed imprisonment and open oneself to the
divine sources of the purification of consciences and of the remission
of sins."
"The
action of the Spirit of truth, which works toward salvific 'convincing
concerning sin,' encounters in a person in this condition an interior
resistance, as it were an impenetrability of conscience... Pope Pius XII had already declared that 'the sin of the century is the loss of the sense of sin,'186
and this loss goes hand in hand with the 'loss of the sense of God.' In
the Exhortation just mentioned we read: 'In fact, God is the origin and
the supreme end of man, and man carries in himself a divine seed. Hence
it is the reality of God that reveals and illustrates the mystery of
man. It is therefore vain to hope that there will take root a
sense of sin against man and against human values, if there is no sense
of offense against God, namely the true sense of sin.'"

Francis's apparent "loss of the sense of sin" and the "sense of offense against God" seems to point towards a type of practical atheism on his part.
The
Catholic News Agency (CNA) headline on December 7, 2013 Francis summarized his talk that
day and his non-transcendent teachings in which he ironically spoke
of 'practical atheism' as neglect of human dignity without talking
about "the loss of the sense of sin" and the "sense of offense against God":
"Pope [Francis]: Neglect of human dignity causes 'practical atheism'"
In
the CNA article Francis says "This false model of man and society
effects a practical atheism (by) denying, de facto, the Word of God that
says ' let us make man in our image," but then when speaking of
"rights," "dignity," and a "throw-away culture" never mentions "the
loss of a sense of sin" or the "sense of offense against God" or the
transcendent.
For Francis the "Word of God" is used as a means to talk of the non-transcendent "material rights and dignity of the human person."
The Francis's talk and, for the most part, his teachings have shown a "indifference to... the transcendent."
Pope
John Paul II, in a General Audience on April 1999, explained that practical atheism is "indifference to... the
transcendent. The Polish Pope said:
"The
contemporary era has devastating forms of 'theoretical' and 'practical'
atheism. Secularism... with its indifference to ultimate questions
and... the transcendent." (Vatican.va>hf_jp_ii_ 14041999)
Finally, the third question to be asked is:
Might Francis and Saint Pope Pius X disagree on Mary being the Co-Redemptrix?
Saint Pope Pius X showed that the Incarnation of Jesus Christ is continued in the the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church, as St. Paul teaches: "[God] made Him Head over the over all the Church, which is His body" (Eph. 1:22,23). So it follows according to St. Pius X that the Mother of God who "furnished the material of His flesh to the Only Son of God, Who was to be born with human members" who are "His body" will "transfuse His gifts into us, His members, and above all that of knowing Him and living through Him (I John iv., 9)":
If then the most Blessed Virgin is the Mother at once of God and men, who can doubt that she will work with all diligence to procure that Christ, Head of the Body of the Church (Coloss. i., 18), may transfuse His gifts into us, His members, and above all that of knowing Him and living through Him (I John iv., 9)?
Moreover it was not only the prerogative of the Most Holy Mother to have furnished the material of His flesh to the Only Son of God, Who was to be born with human members (S. Bede Ven. L. Iv. in Luc. xl.), of which material should be prepared the Victim for the salvation of men; but hers was also the office of tending and nourishing that Victim, and at the appointed time presenting Him for the sacrifice. Hence that uninterrupted community of life and labors of the Son and the Mother, so that of both might have been uttered the words of the Psalmist"My life is consumed in sorrow and my years in groans" (Ps xxx., 11). When the supreme hour of the Son came, beside the Cross of Jesus there stood Mary His Mother, not merely occupied in contemplating the cruel spectacle, but rejoicing that her Only Son was offered for the salvation of mankind, and so entirely participating in His Passion, that if it had been possible she would have gladly borne all the torments that her Son bore (S. Bonav. 1. Sent d. 48, ad Litt. dub. 4). And from this community of will and suffering between Christ and Mary she merited to become most worthily the Reparatrix of the lost world (Eadmeri Mon. De Excellentia Virg. Mariae, c. 9) and Dispensatrix of all the gifts that Our Savior purchased for us by His Death and by His Blood.
It cannot, of course, be denied that the dispensation of these treasures is the particular and peculiar right of Jesus Christ, for they are the exclusive fruit of His Death, who by His nature is the mediator between God and man. Nevertheless, by this companionship in sorrow and suffering already mentioned between the Mother and the Son, it has been allowed to the august Virgin to be the most powerful mediatrix and advocate of the whole world with her Divine Son (Pius IX. Ineffabilis). The source, then, is Jesus Christ "of whose fullness we have all received" (John i., 16), "from whom the whole body, being compacted and fitly joined together by what every joint supplieth, according to the operation in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in charity" (Ephesians iv., 16). But But Mary, as St. Bernard justly remarks, is the channel (Serm. de temp on the Nativ. B. V. De Aquaeductu n. 4); or, if you will, the connecting portion the function of which is to join the body to the head and to transmit to the body the influences and volitions of the head - We mean the neck. Yes, says St. Bernardine of Sienna, "she is the neck of Our Head, by which He communicates to His mystical body all spiritual gifts" (Quadrag. de Evangel. aetern. Serm. x., a. 3, c. iii.).
We are then, it will be seen, very far from attributing to the Mother of God a productive power of grace - a power which belongs to God alone. Yet, since Mary carries it over all in holiness and union with Jesus Christ, and has been associated by Jesus Christ in the work of redemption, she merits for us de congruo, in the language of theologians, what Jesus Christ merits for us de condigno, and she is the supreme Minister of the distribution of graces. Jesus "sitteth on the right hand of the majesty on high" (Hebrews i. b.). Mary sitteth at the right hand of her Son - a refuge so secure and a help so trusty against all dangers that we have nothing to fear or to despair of under her guidance, her patronage, her protection. (Pius IX. in Bull Ineffabilis). Francis Notes:
- Doctor
of the Church St. Francis de Sales totally confirmed beyond any doubt
the possibility of a heretical pope and what must be done by the Church
in such a situation:
"[T]he Pope... WHEN he is EXPLICITLY a heretic, he falls ipso facto from his dignity and out of the Church, and the Church MUST either deprive him, or, as some say, declare him deprived, of his Apostolic See."
(The Catholic Controversy, by St. Francis de Sales, Pages 305-306)
Saint Robert Bellarmine, also, said "the Pope heretic is not deposed ipso facto, but must be declared deposed by the Church."
