Leo did it again--or rather, he didn't. What's so bad about waving, instead? It's an acknowledgment, isn't it? True, but an acknowledgment of what kind?

He did it again--or rather, he didn't.

Appearing in public after surgery, the man the world calls Leo XIV was met with cheers.  Dressed in white, ready to read something, evidently, he raised his hand and . . . wait for it . . . waved at everybody.  Punto.

Those of us who were watching intently the first time this man appeared after the conclave on the loggia felt a familiar, nauseating sense not only of disappointment, but also of betrayal.  Disappointment, because as a Catholic one is profounding longing for, and reasonably expecting, a blessing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Betrayal, because this guy isn't the Prom Queen.  He's supposed to be the Pope.

The transition from supernatural to natural, from vertical to horizontal in the "lived experience" of the institutional Church is just about complete.  What's so bad about waving, instead?  It's an acknowledgment, isn't it?  True, but an acknowledgment of what kind?  

Our Lord has told us, in Matthew 5:18, that every little bit of the Law counts.  The same thing applies to every word, every syllable of a word, in Sacred Scripture.  The man once known as Robert Prevost calls us to contemplate the reality not just of Judas betraying Jesus Christ, but of betraying Him "with a kiss."

Greeting Our Lord, Judas did so as one human being to another.  There was nothing of Peter's great confession of faith about it--no acknowledgment that this human being, the one he had the temerity to greet in that reductionistic way, is also the Son of the living God.  We know that Jorge Bergoglio was a big fan of Judas, actually.  Has anyone ever stopped to wonder why?

Leo's wave, representative of his "theological" outlook generally, smacks of the same thing.  Instead of treating Our Lord as Who He Is, the Prevost-Bergoglians want Him recognized as merely one teacher among many.  But even "teacher" seems to be too much for them, these days.  If the leaders of the institutional Church are so bound and determined to "learn from" the "lived experience" of the laity these days, then why doesn't our "lived experience" of being ignored, cheated, lied to, and manipulated by them count for something, too?  If they are not authoritative "teachers" themselves, then why should we listen to them about synodality, Amoris laetitia, or anything else?

Bishop Schneider has finally stated openly that the Novus Ordo has got to go.  While many well-versed liturgists have cited profound reasons for this (and have been invalidated professionally and personally for their pains), another, less noticed reason is the infamous "kiss of peace.". Cringeworthy at all times, contrived and distracting, we are now seeing it for the Trojan Horse it was always meant to be.  James Martin, no less, wants it--specifically--instrumentalized in the furtherance of his private agenda. What was it C. S. Lewis said?  Something about, aim for Heaven, and you get earth thrown in; aim for earth, and you lose even earth on your way to Hell?

The thing about Judas kissing Jesus in that moment, way, and place is that the significance of the gesture had been previously altered so that its external form no longer matched its communicated meaning.  Ostensibly an expression of fraternity, it had been turned into a signal of something else to those on the watch, looking to bring about a pre-established purpose of their own. The Prevost Wave has the same problem; while there is nothing objectionable about treating any old  crowd like that, it is not how you greet the faithful gathered in Saint Peter's Square.  Not if you're the one for whom a sufficient number of conclave ballots were cast.  Not unless you intend to communicate something other than what the gesture itself is culturally understood to express..

By not blessing everybody Prevost is also, if a little less vulgarly than Bergoglio managed to do it, pulling away his ring.  He is indicating that his pontificate is a synodal one, inclusive of "todos, todos, todos," except for the people who submit themselves to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  He has to wave, not bless, because the "Spirit" leading the Synod is not the one cited in the Trinitarian formula at all. Or, if He is, then the Synod's unblessed participants are in the process of committing the one and only truly unforgivable sin. They are committing spiritual suicide, as their patron saint committed literal suicide before them.

In this silence remember God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Three Divine Persons yet One God, has an ordered universe where you can know truth and falsehood as well as never forget that He wants you to have eternal happiness with Him as his son or daughter by grace. Make this a practice. By doing this you are doing more good than reading anything here or anywhere else on the Internet.
