The author who undoubtedly elaborated most carefully the notion of natural law, Thomas Aquinas, distinguishes four main tendencies or inclinations in our nature: 1) the human being tends to persevere in his being; 2) he tends to unite with the other sex and reproduce; 3) he tends to associate with his fellow beings and to form political bodies; and 4) he tends finally to “know the truth about God.” - Pierre Manet

Political philosopher of natural law Pierre Manent in his scholarship presents how the humanitarianism of Francis and Leo sever us from the common good of families and societies which should ultimately be directed to loving God above all things and working for the salvation of ourselves and others.

Manet has argued that Francis's focus on universal borderless rights threatens to replace authentic Christian faith with a abstract secular humanitarianism. He contents that the Leo/Francis interpretation of the Good Samaritan in Fratelli Tutt is a quasi-humanitarian secular parable, whereas the Samaritan fundamentally represents Jesus Christ healing a mortally wounded humanity.

Moreover, philosopher Dr. Frederick D. Wilhelmsen showed why Catholic Natural Law can not be confused with humanitarianism be it Marxist or French Revolution "rights" positivism:

If natural law is limited by revelation, then natural law in turn limits politics. Within the double limitation, Western man has lived for some 2,000 years, and evidence is everywhere around us...

... [N]aked politics, the will of the prince recently enforced by bayonet... Legal positivism, and historicism, wears different garbs... Legal positivism would have it that law is what the prince says it is. Whether the prince be the authority of a legislature, the judiciary, or an executive is irrelevant.

Historicism would have it that man is so bound to phenomenologically given that he simply cannot transcend his circumstance of time and place, and his law is simply an expression of history. Both of them deny that the laws man makes must be measured by the deep measure which is man himself, not man bound to this or that concrete order of things, not man white or black or brown, not man medieval or modern or contemporary, but man. When this last is denied, then the political philosopher truly can learn nothing from history...

... It is very difficult to get men debased by the modern state to ask the right question concerning the good life because their question today comes out of a world in which natural law is not only denied in theory, but exercised in practice in only the most obvious and pitiful ways. Even Marxist professors do not defraud their garage mechanics or cheat on their grocery bills, but from such elementary and even banal decency we are not going to get very far in attempt to remedy the ills of the age. Even positivist professors who insist on television that the quality of being human must be earned and is not presumed to be something given with birth do not poison and shoot their children...

...The natural law is still operative everywhere because it is natural in its spontaneous affirmation of the good, but that spontaneous affirmation is not being put down by doctrines that either think that man is much less than he is or that he ought to be some kind of superman dominating all creation...

... Avoid confusing natural law with the "Rights of Man" propounded by the French Revolutionary School of the Enlightenment. These "rights" were presumed to be abstractions divorced from prescriptions and customs and hence liberated from the supposed shackles of history. The result would be amusing had they not worked so much blood and tragedy into body politics of the West and even into the world.
