Why Mazza lands the blow Feser cannot answerA recent book by Dr. Edmund Mazza drives toward the larger theological crisis conservatives keep trying to evade. Mazza claims that men like Edward Feser want to hold two positions at once. They want the claimant in Rome to remain the true pope and universal rule of faith, while also admitting that he and his recent predecessors can scatter serious doctrinal confusion through the ordinary exercise of their office. The emergency escape hatch is always the same: yes, the pope can err in non-infallible teaching; yes, he can say dangerous things; yes, he can sow confusion; but no, this does not overthrow the Catholic doctrine of the papacy. That maneuver has kept many conservatives afloat for years. Mazza argues that it also dissolves the practical meaning of Catholic obedience. Once the faithful are told that the living magisterium may feed them ambiguity, bad formulations, doctrinally harmful emphases, and destabilizing novelty on faith and morals, the so-called proximate rule of faith stops functioning as a safe rule in any meaningful sense. The ordinary Catholic is then thrown back onto private judgment, however politely dressed up. He must decide which papal statements are safe, which require filtration, which are merely prudential, which are badly worded, which are in continuity, which are not, and which can be safely ignored. Instead of being able to depend on obedience, the Faith becomes a survivalist version of magisterial triage. Mazza presses the older Catholic instinct harder. If Christ gave the Church as a trustworthy teacher in faith and morals, then the normal operation of Her teaching office cannot become a recurring source of poison. A pope cannot serve as the universal shepherd while habitually requiring the sheep to wear doctrinal hazmat gear. Mazza argues that the conservative answer, after years of patchwork, has become increasingly implausible because the evidence has become increasingly ridiculous. One can perhaps build an academic shelter around a rare medieval dispute. It becomes much harder when the contemporary Roman apparatus gives you synodality, liturgical chaos, ecumenical theater, feminist signaling, therapeutic anthropology, and globalist appointments in rapid succession. That is why these stories matter together. The cumulative effect is theological. Each item adds weight to the same question: how long can Catholics be told that the visible authority established by Christ remains their safe guide while that same authority continuously speaks in the accents of the revolution? Pray an Our Father now for reparation for the sins committed because of Francis’s Amoris Laetitia and for the restoration of the Church.
Stop for a moment of silence, ask Jesus Christ what He wants you to do now and next. In this silence remember God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Three Divine Persons yet One God, has an ordered universe where you can know truth and falsehood as well as never forget that He wants you to have eternal happiness with Him as his son or daughter by grace.
