[T]he ROOT CAUSE of the degeneration of Western Civilization can be traced back directly to the Nominalist Heresy, initially espoused by William of Ockham. (see here)
Nominalism in turn created the environment for Cartesian philosophy, which appeared in the first half of the 17th Century. Cartesian “philosophy”, or rather it’s significance is captured in this Wikipedia entry quite well:
Descartes has often been dubbed the father of modern Western philosophy, the thinker whose approach has profoundly changed the course of Western philosophy and set the basis for modernity.[10][64] The first two of his Meditations on First Philosophy, those that formulate the famous methodic doubt, represent the portion of Descartes’ writings that most influenced modern thinking.[65] It has been argued that Descartes himself didn’t realize the extent of this revolutionary move.[66] In shifting the debate from “what is true” to “of what can I be certain?,” Descartes arguably shifted the authoritative guarantor of truth from God to humanity (even though Descartes himself claimed he received his visions from God) – while the traditional concept of “truth” implies an external authority, “certainty” instead relies on the judgment of the individual.
This Cartesian anti-rationalism can be reduced to the notion that Truth is not as Aristotle had defined , i.e. what is, that it is. So what effectively happened is that capital “T” Truth, i.e. bringing the mind into conformity with reality (‘adaequatio rei et intellectus’), became small “t” “truth”, i.e. bringing thought into line with life (‘adaequatio realis mentis et vitae’). And it is this “philosophical” tradition that was at the heart of the suppression of Thomism in the second half of the 20th Century, leading up to the Second Vatican Council. - "The official HYPOTHESIS of the Deus Ex Machina blog" [https://sarmaticusblog.wordpress.com/category/context/page/12/ /]
Protestant theologian Richard Muller wrote that Martin Luther was "profound[ly] impact[ed] by Nominalism:
"One of the elements of late medieval... nominalist theology
that had a profound impact on Luther was its denial of any analogy
between God and man and its consequent recognition of the impossibility
of formulating a rational metaphysic concerning God." [https://growrag.wordpress.com/2015/10/11/knowing-god-martin-luther-karl-barth-thomas-torrance-theologia-crucis-against-analogia-entis/ ]
English professor Louis Markos in his book Lewis Agonistes shows
that Nominalist theorists such as apparently Luther and the liberal Woke Francis who loves Luther's theology are in some sense in league with Nominalist Islam in a war with reason and analogy in
knowing God and objective reality.
Francis's liberal Wokism's denial of philosophic Thomistic Analogical
Realism which underpins the infallible Catholic doctrines as well as
traditional art and literature with transcendent truths which is
conveyed in material images reveals that he appears to be a Nominalistic
Modernist.
Markos says liberals of the Enlightenment Woke mindset which was brought about in part by Luther's Nominalist movement believed only in materially observable “facts” and denied the existence
of “transcendent truths in material images” be it philosophy, art,
literature or God.
“Postmodernist liberals such Michael de Certeau who Francis called the ‘greatest theologian for today’ seemed take it a step forward by apparently proclaiming that not only is God dead, but language is dead. They believe that words have no meaning.”
Liberal theorist’s thought in history brought humanity Communism and
Fascism with their violence against human life. Lenin and Castro were
Enlightenment men and Hitler was a follower of the proto postmodernist
Nietzsche. Pro-choicers are also followers of Nietzsche’s will to power.
Nominalist
Islam showed its alliance with Nominalist liberal theorists when they
firebombed and shoot bullet holes through Christian churches in West
Bank, killed an Italian nun and threatened to bomb the Vatican with a
suicide attack when Pope Benedict XVI gave the September 12 talk called
FAITH, REASON AND THE UNIVERSITY. MEMORIES AND REFLECTIONS. In that talk
he said:
“The decisive statement in this argument against
violent conversion is this: not to act in accordance with reason is
contrary to God’s nature. The editor, Theodore Khoury, observes: For the
emperor, as a Byzantine shaped by Greek philosophy, this statement is
self-evident. But for Muslim teaching, God is absolutely transcendent.
His will is not bound up with any of our categories, even that of
rationality.”
“Here Khoury quotes a work of the noted French
Islamist R. Arnaldez, who points out that Ibn Hazn went so far as to
state that God is not bound even by his own word, and that nothing would
oblige him to reveal the truth to us. Were it God’s will, we would even
have to practise idolatry.”
The pope in the lecture countered this anti-analogy theories which ultimately deny transcendent truth by saying:
“As
opposed to this, the faith of the Church has always insisted that
between God and us, between his eternal Creator Spirit and our created
reason there exists a real analogy, in which unlikeness remains
infinitely greater than likeness, yet not to the point of abolishing
analogy and its language (cf. Lateran IV). God does not become more
divine when we push him away from us in a sheer, impenetrable
voluntarism; rather, the truly divine God is the God who has revealed
himself as “logos” and, as “logos,” has acted and continues to act
lovingly on our behalf. Certainly, love “transcends” knowledge and is
thereby capable of perceiving more than thought alone (cf. Eph 3:19);
nonetheless it continues to be love of the God who is “logos.”
Consequently, Christian worship is “spiritual” worship in harmony with
the eternal Word and with our reason (cf. Rom 12:1).”
Pray
that Francis, Modernists, Islam, Woke liberals and Protestants who follow Luther's Nominalism be converted to Pope Benedict’s
philosophical teaching on Thomistic analogy, objective reality and reason as well as the
Catholic faith.
Finally, the scholar James Larson showed that the “Father of Vatican Council II" Cardinal John Newman was also a Nominalist and a Modernist whose philosophy was apparently accepted by Francis and explains why he keeps "proposing statements
and pastoral practices which are in direct contradiction to... Faith":
Newman... embrace[s]... the philosophical position of
Nominalism. If the reality of all things in the exterior world is only unit and individual, and if universals
(dog, man, tree, etc) are not “real” in themselves, but rather only
human fabrications or creations, then they are only “names,” totally
lacking in real content. They are simply arbitrary mental
generalization and categorizations. They do not correspond to the
“eternal types” to be found in the “intellectual light” of God for all
eternity. All this, of course, flies directly in the face of Thomistic
metaphysics and natural philosophy.
The entirety of the Grammar of Assent is therefore devoted to
elaborating an allegedly valid grounds for assenting to the Catholic
Faith, established not upon the vertical dimension of Faith as so aptly
delineated by Cardinal Manning (the light of the human intellect
responding to the radiance of Divinely Revealed Truth), but rather upon
an experiential foundation which is a dimension within the interior of
man that corresponds to the empirical foundations of man’s outer
perceptions. This dimension – this empiricism of the soul – is called by
Newman the “illative sense.” It is equivalent to what Pope Pius X, in
his encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis (On the Doctrine of the
Modernists) termed the “religious sense”, and which he pinpointed as
that fundamental concept by which the Modernist replaces the absolute
objective reality and truth of the “God above” with a God and His Truth
who are evolving within man...
... Underneath all the subtleties and obfuscations, Newman’s epistemology enshrines “lived-experience” as the most vital principle in our assent of faith. As said previously, this amounts to an “empiricism of the soul,” and is a fundamental tenet of Modernism. It is no wonder, therefore, that both George Tyrrell and Alfred Loisy, generally seen to be founders of Modernism, considered Newman to be their precursor. Tyrrell in fact declared himself to be a “devout follower of Newman”. Newman has been often called the “Father of Vatican Council II. He is also a “Father” of Modernism. In understanding this fact, we should no longer in any way be bewildered by his canonization by Pope Francis...

... This is why any militant condemnations (such as Pope Pius IX’s Syllabus) of such things as indifferentism, religious pluralism and separation of Church from State, Paganism, Islam, or Protestantism are virtually impossible to the “illative sense” of a Catholic Church now dominated by the epistemological orientation of which Newman is a primary architect...
... In other words the epistemology exemplified in John Henry Newman, and now incarnate in the Church, enshrines not only empiricism as the fundamental principle of knowledge in the human soul, but also establishes a schizophrenic and self-contradictory relationship between “notional” belief and “real” belief, and therefore between dogma and practice. It is now endemic in the Church with Pope Francis claiming to accept the entirety of the Catholic Faith, while proposing statements and pastoral practices which are in direct contradiction to this Faith. Stop for a moment of silence, ask Jesus Christ what He wants you to do now and next. In this silence remember God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost - Three Divine Persons yet One God, has an ordered universe where you can know truth and falsehood as well as never forget that He wants you to have eternal happiness with Him as his son or daughter by grace. Make this a practice. By doing this you are doing more good than reading anything here or anywhere else on the Internet.
Francis Notes:
- Doctor
of the Church St. Francis de Sales totally confirmed beyond any doubt
the possibility of a heretical pope and what must be done by the Church
in such a situation:
"[T]he Pope... WHEN he is EXPLICITLY a heretic, he falls ipso facto from his dignity and out of the Church, and the Church MUST either deprive him, or, as some say, declare him deprived, of his Apostolic See."
(The Catholic Controversy, by St. Francis de Sales, Pages 305-306)
Saint Robert Bellarmine, also, said "the Pope heretic is not deposed ipso facto, but must be declared deposed by the Church."
