Does a priest--or anyone--need to possess a certain "authority" in order to perceive reality and comment upon it? Eric Sammons is willing to engage in rank intellectual dishonesty; Father Altman is not. Anthony Stine is a devoted Catholic and balanced podcaster who needs to stop asking everybody else what they think, and to start drawing some (admittedly) uncomfortable conclusions on his own.
The notion that only members of the hierarchy are allowed to exercise the faculties of intellect and will given to them by God is a cult-like--not Catholic--conviction. During the time of the Arian crisis, should lay people have restricted themselves to a studied neutrality about the subject of Christ's divinity, until the crisis was over? No! Lay people cannot declare doctrine or remove an antipope, but they don't have to pretend not to know what they do know, in the meanwhile.
It is deeply disturbing that people seem ready to pit rationality against the Faith, as though being a good Catholic means being prepared to blind yourself to observation and reflection. This goes completely against the essence of Catholicism, not to mention contradicting the witness of countless saints and converts who have studied the Faith, or studied themselves into it.

The Universi Domini Gregis says in Article 53: "... any one of us, by divine disposition, if elected Roman Pontiff, will undertake to faithfully fulfill the Petrine múnus of Pastor of the Universal Church But if he cannot exercise the múnus, then he is prevented from exercising the ministry".
And we can see this in canon 335:
"As long as the Roman See is vacant or totally impeded, nothing should be changed in the government of the Universal Church."
And canon 412: "The episcopal see is understood to be prevented if the diocesan bishop is totally prevented from exercising the pastoral múnus in the diocese by imprisonment, confinement, exile or incapacity, and cannot communicate even by letter with his diocesan."
So it was an act of the pope that leads to excommunication to Bergoglio, because he does not have the múnus. The latter was held with Ratzinger until his death.
These evidences above, for example, cannot remain silent, although the Church has not manifested itself so far. If we were silent, then the stones speak for us.
