Is mischaracterizing the errors of Francis/Fernandez a kind of lie that is not morally acceptable? Can the National Catholic Register claim any semblance of intellectual integrity?

Still popesplaining?  Really?  (r.e. "Humanity's Infinite Dignity" by Larry Chapp, National Catholic Register, April 18, 2024)

Can mental gymnastics twist the term "infinite dignity" into something remotely palatable?  Of course.  The title of the latest DDF release was designed for this very reason, stemming from the phraseology of John Paul II himself.

Can the great Polish pope's understanding of the words, or Chapp's ludicrously fanciful take itself, be squared with the rest of Fernandez's "theology"--which is the actual setting in which the verbiage must be understood, if any semblance of intellectual integrity can be claimed?

No.

(Hopefully, the Chapps of this world are  still capable of grasping the sense of an assertion that straightforward.)

As for the priest-friend of Larry's who believes mild Bergoglian criticism, in place of a deserved degree, will suffice to preserve whatever remains of the prestige of the papacy itself, let us remember that the end does not justify the means.  Whatever may or may not be accomplished by mischaracterizing the errors coming forth from Rome, it would not make this kind of lie morally acceptable.

The papal task--shared in various degrees by his delegates--is not to give us "gift horse" pronouncements not to be "looked in the mouth,"  but to defend and proclaim the Deposit of the Faith in its entirety, in season and out.  Larry Chapp and company have no more leave to lower this bar than do Bergoglio and Fernandez themselves.
