Pope Francis and the sophistry of saying that for God, 2 + 2 can equal 5...

...A triangle with four sides. 2+2 = 5. What is at stake here? Cardinal Caffara again... ...That is the core of the matter here. As the cardinal says,

According to Anthony Stine, a new joint statement has appeared, issued by Bishops Strickland and Schneider together.  What it says is, perhaps, less instructive than its very existence.  Why is Archbishop Vigano in hiding, when they do not have to be?  Why is McCarrick's nemesis considered a mortal threat by the Bergoglian autocracy, whereas sidelining is seen as sufficient for others?

Orthodoxy doesn't matter to the Argentinian-in-white, as long as the way in which it is served up poses no intrinsic challenge to his raw ecclesial power.  Indeed, his own utterances can coincide with it, when that contingency happens to serve his party's purposes.  In fact, when orthodoxy can be so harnessed, the more of it, the better!  That is why Archbishop Vigano's character is intolerable to the St. Gallenites, while others become useful idiots.  Archbishop Vigano is leading people to reject being abused, while Bishops Strickland and Schneider are modeling how to become--literally or figuratively, sexually or ideologically--the McCarrick-type predators' ideal prey.  Why?

Bishops Strickland and Schneider have acquiesced--prior to, and as a condition of, being permitted to state anything else, howsoever beautiful or theologically refulgent their remaining message may be--to the fundamentally non-Catholic principle animating this pontificate; namely, that to obey God may be reduced to submitting to those who are charged with representing Him, the representative's own foundationally required and essentially more profound submission notwithstanding.  Their rank brand of cowering Mottramism situates them within the mentality not of the martyrs and confessors, but of those in the docks at the Nuremburg Trials who admitted to flipping the switches that released the Zyklon-B yet simultaneously  shrugged their shoulders, stating, "I was always told that the responsibility rested in Berlin."

This attitude is the polar opposite--indeed, the photographic negative--of the authentic sense in which a Catholic's responsibility rests in Rome.  Submission of intellect and will cannot involve the denial of that which is rational nor the choosing of that which is wrong.  An authority figure who attempts to compel such capitulation, as Bergoglio has consistently done and occasionally accomplished, subverts the very reason that all forms of hierarchy are established here on earth.  Archbishop Vigano bears witness to this truth, while Bishops Strickland and Schneider dogmatically refrain, no matter how many ways in which the term "heroic" may be applied to them otherwise.

The excess cannot be corrected by the defect.  In this day and age, when "conscience" is corruptly invoked to justify all manner of mortal sin, only an authentically Catholic restoration of its true essence can provide hope and a way forward.  Instead, on top of everything else, we are made to endure the spectacle of otherwise sound men like  Bishops Strickland and Schneider behaving as though they are bereft of any consciences of their own.  

They are not, and neither are we.
