Did “the Gospel of Rousseau" make Intergralist Maritain's & Chesterton's Vatican II Followers Leftists?

Independent Catholic scholar Richard Salbato said that leftist Jacques Maritain's “Integral Humanism” which apparently implicitly teaches the "idea of freedom of conscience even from the teachings of the Church on faith and morals" was a "false philosophy":

When between 1910 and 1920 the Catholic Monarchies fell to secularism, even the bishops and priests started to cave into this idea of freedom of conscience even from the teachings of the Church on faith and morals. The one most responsible for introducing this false philosophy into the Church was the Catholic theologian, Jacques Maritain. This was about the same time as the rise of secularism and the republics in Europe, around 1920.

Maritain’s “Integral Humanism” was so eminently acceptable to prelates anxious to appease Caesar that it could not fail to be accepted.

Maritain explains that integral humanism “...is a universal fraternity of men of good will belonging to different religions or none (including even those who reject the idea of the Creator). It is within this fraternity that the Church should exercise a leavening influence without imposing itself and without demanding that it be recognized as the one true Church. The cement of this fraternity is the virtue of doing good, and understanding grounded in respect for human dignity.’

This idea of universal fraternity was neither original nor new, because as stated above, it was already advanced by the philosophers of the Revolutionaries of 1789. It is also the fraternity beloved of freemasonry and even of the Marxists.

Maritain said:

“Within this “universal fraternity”, the Church must be neither intransigent nor authoritarian. She must know how to make religion acceptable. And so that the truths of faith and morality may be acceptable, Christianity must be practical rather than dogmatic.’

Pope Pius XI fought against this humanism, whereas Pope Paul VI was an admirer of Jacques Maritain. It is from this admiration and influence that Paul VI leaned over backwards to see things in the anti-Christian world’s perspective and unhesitatingly accepted the terms of reference upon which Jacobins, Freemasons, Marxists - the enemies of the Church – had hitherto been insisting. He maintained the faith of Peter but made no preeminent place for Peter’s faith over other opinions
. [Satan says: “Never Judge!” By Richard Salbato, ]

Moreover, the CIA online library reports that Maritain was a "non- [USSR] Communist leftist" operative:

"Agency files reveal the true origins of the Berlin conference... helped to solidify CIA's emerging strategy of promoting the non-Communist left... the Agency's political operations against Communism over the next two decades."

"...The [CIA] congress in Berlin rolled ahead... World-renowned philosophers John Dewey Bertrand Russell... and [non-Communist leftist] Jacques Maritain agreed to lend gravitas to the event."
(www.cia.gov./library, "Origins of Congress for Cultural Freedom, 1949-50") [https://www.cia.gov/library/center-for-the-study-of-intelligence/csi-publications/csi-studies/studies/95unclass/Warner.html]

Pope Paul VI who was obviously the top architect of Vatican II said of the possible CIA "non-Communist leftist" operative Maritain:

"I am a disciple of Maritain. I call him my teacher."
(The Remnant, "Saul Alinsky and 'Saint' Pope Paul VI: Genesis of the Conciliar Surrender to the World, by Christopher A. Ferrara, August 16, 2018) [https://remnantnewspaper.com/web/index.php/articles/item/4029-rules-for-radicals-when-paul-vi-met-saul-alinsky]

The "teacher" of the pope Maritain who collaborated with the CIA non-Communist leftist "congress in Berlin," also, collaborated with his "friend" the non-Communist leftist Saul Alinsky who he introduced to Paul VI before he became pope according to the above Remnant article.

Paul VI born Giovanni Montini "served in the Holy See's Secretariat of State from 1922 to 1954. While in the Secretariat of State, Montini and Domenico Tardini were considered as the closest and most influential advisors of Pius XII." The CIA in 2006 declassified the following OSS 1945 document that apparently connects the Secretariat of State or State Secretariat office where Montini worked at the time with Maritain:

"Sub-source stated that the appointment of Jacques Maritain as French ambassador to the Holy See one of the greatest problems to the Holy See, because Maritain... is a well-known leftist, who advocated a close collaboration with progressive-minded Catholics and radical elements, even Communists... The Maritain presence in the Vatican will be the focus of all such movement throughout the world. The State Secretariat expects Maritain to be the focus of all such movements"
(Office of Strategic Services, Date of Information: 10 February 1945, ZSOLT ARADI VOL. 1_0107, PTF doc. 11316 and [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wik i/Pope_Paul_VI])

Another possible CIA operative besides Maritain who was a top architect of Vatican II on the "Declaration on Religious Liberty" was Fr. John Courtney Murray. Church Militant reported:

""Murray and his crowd of CIA operatives and TIME Magazine won the day, helping American Catholics buy into the proposition of the separation of Church and State and calling it 'religious liberty.'"
(Church Militant, "The Vortex - The CIA's Priest," November 11, 2015) [https://www.churchmilitant.com/video/episode/vort-2015-11-11]

The Remnant, also, revealed America Magazine might be another Deep State propaganda operative:

" [The] globalist establishment... Murray, SJ, push[ed] liberalism at the Second Vatican Council with documents such as Dignitatis Humanae as well as a slew of publications... One of the major outlets through which... Murray pushed his Americanism [heresy] was... America [now edited by Francis appointed consultor to the Vatican's Secretariat for Communications Fr. James Martin]."
(The Remnant, John Podesta's Catholic Spring Part IV: America Magazine LeftCat Kitty Litter or Deep State Propaganda?". February 29, 2019) [https://remnantnewspaper.com/web/index.php/articles/item/4029-rules-for-radicals-when-paul-vi-met-saul-alinsky]

And to end on a coincidence, if Pope Pius XII hadn't died of two stokes on October 8, 1958 it is possible that Paul IV's Vatican II might never have happened since two of its main architects would have been condemned.

In 2008, the liberal Catholic World admitted that Pope Pius XII was "preparing" to condemn probably the main architect of Vatican II Jacques Maritain and another architect of the Council John Courtney Murray "who "played a role in... Declaration on Religious Liberty":

"[T]he Holy Office was preparing an official condemnation of Murray, Jacques Maritain... only the death of Pope Pius XII on October 8, 1958... prevented this from happening."
(Catholic World, "Censuring of John Courtney Murray Part Two," March/April 2008)

Finally, Polish scholar Maceij Sobiech presents evidence that G.K. Chesterton and possibly his more extreme Vatican II devotees who are so-called "conservative" integralist "Distributists" may be follow travelers with the leftist Maritain. They may be leftist wolfs in conservative sheep's clothing:

And,  to  end  our  enumeration  here,  the  result  is  of course  such that the image of “Chesterton the rightist” penetrates to the public view, where – in the immortal words of Jacques Maritain from his Letter on Independence (1935) – passing through “the opinions of men, the evil commerce of appearance and blood, the terrors and hatreds” it becomes a parody of itself – but a telling parody indeed; and let us say here for the moment only as much as that it is emphatically not an accident  that  Adam  Gopnik,  in  his  famous  article  from The New Yorker, published when the first talks about the possibilities ... [of Chesterton being] “a medievalising reactionary [who] dreamed of an anti-capitalist agricultural state overseen by the Catholic Church and governed by a military.”...

...William Oddie, to whom I owe this information, is quite right in calling these accusations “grotesque” – but it is all the more suggestive tha t   he is able to to this, and to repel them almost effortlessly, because he himself is one of the pioneering researchers that acknowledge the “leftist” leaning in Chesterton’s political  attitude ...  [and] “[His] enthusiasm for red revolution,”...

...Maritain’s perspective, as we have said, is as simple as it is illuminating...  Primarily: the “physiological” or “temperamental” disposition of the subject, with “Left” signifying the general desire to change the status quo...

... Thus, the revolutionary question enters Chesterton’s writings as soon as in his youth, namely: when he was eighteen; as Oddie reports, he wrote a long and emotional poem about the death of Danton effectuated by Robespierre... It is, therefore, quite unsurprising that the topic returns, even in quite unpolitical works, such as the famous Orthodoxy (1908), where Chesterton could not refrain from remarking about “the French Revolution that created the peasant wealth of France” Or his study of the English literature of the Victorian period (1914), in which book we read, in connection with the problem of the French Revolution, about “the Gospel of Rousseau, glorious truisms that refreshed the souls of the nations” [his] unpolitical works seems to me extremely telling and only proves that for Chesterton the French Revolution was as if a “pivot” of history, a central occurrence, around which history revolved. Yet it is the political books, of course, that serve here as the main sources of data. Thus, for example, in his article from the The Daily News (4 May 1907) cited by Oddie, we find a passage relating to the 1905-07 Revolution in Russia... " revolution of kind going on in Russia; and that ought to be enough to make any healthy man happy. Revolution is certainly the divine part of man; ‘Behold, I make all things new’”... Finally, in What I Saw in America (1922) he explicitly expresses his sympathy with the revolutionary heritage in history...

... It is quite unsurprising that from this “pre-political,” emotionalo-moral (so to speak) structure of character there followed corresponding political ideas, also fitting in the left- wing frame of thinking. “Primary” (if I might say so) political ideas in greater bulk stemming from the thought of Jean Jacques Rousseau, taken by Maritain as the quint-essential philosopher of the political left (and, as Bronisław Baczko...
[demonstrated] .... Chesterton had an extensive knowledge of Rousseau – he rarely made it known (for reasons that are in themselves interesting but about which we have no time to speak here), but in an article “A Note on Rousseau” from 1930 issue of G.K.’s    Weekly...  he calls his a “genious” and openly reveals a connection between Rousseau’s thought and his own views – especially Distributism.

It is thus unsurprising that Chesterton declared his support for such political ideas of the Swiss philosopher as, predominantly, the general will. The shadows and traces of its presence in Chesterton’s thought... Chesterton quasi-personialities under the name of “the Mob”; with this “Mob” being endowed with a common will – [Rousseau's socialist] a General Will, which (as we learn again by the means of metaphorical personiification – not the similarity with the case of the Revolution...

... And let me be well-understood: I am not denying, by any means, the differences that occur between Chesterton’s thought and socialism, especially Marxist socialism... There is the tremendous difference as to the concept of man (Chesterton was emphatically not a materialist). It is all true. Yet  it  is  also  quite  obvious  that  both  light and right wing of the political scene constitute certain spectra: they include many different options and nuances. It simply means that Chesterton’s “leftism” was much different than the “leftism” of Marx or Shaw. Indeed – it was very, very original... But the fact that is was a form of “leftism” seems to me quite undeniable – and  one  of the  most fundamental  reasons  of the general failure to notice it is a terrible habit. Catholic scholar John Rao shows that as Maritain said Catholic followers of “the Gospel of Rousseau" like Chesterton's integralist "Distributist" promoters are leftists without possibly understanding that they are apparently the opposite of being conservatives:

A good case could be made for entitling a history of modern Catholicism The Age of the Abbé Félicité de Lamennais (1782-1854). Son of a Breton bourgeois family ennobled one year before the outbreak of the [French] Revolution, Lamennais left a profound and permanent mark on the life of the Church...

... Quicksand lies everywhere in Lamennais' Rousseauian Third Age of Humanity. One thing always dissolves into another within it. Spiritual truths are grounded in commitment to passion and will. Energetic Catholic Peoples opposed to palingenesis are condemned for their lethargy. Getting in touch with their true nature requires annihilation of what they themselves believe that nature to be. A single individual speaks infallibly and democratically for an entire hostile People armed with rational arguments and enthusiastically eager to crush his wishes. Contradiction after contradiction piles up. Whoever unmasks the deceptions somehow proves his own artifice and dissembling hypocrisy, voluntarily resigns from the human race, and justifies his future obliteration at the hands of the Prophet of the humble and the weak.

Despite his condemnation, Lamennais' negative influence has come back again and again to haunt the Catholic world, in 2004 much more than in the 1830's. "Defeated" by Gregory XVI, it was promoted in more "prudent" form in the Liberal Catholicism of the 1850's and 1860's, and then more determinedly again in the Sillon of the 1890's and 1900's. Driven underground by Pius X, it re-emerged with reference to natural law analogies in Integral Humanism from the 1930's onwards. Its mystical adulation both of the fraternal community as well as the individual or elite raising its sleeping consciousness was reaffirmed by Personalism at the same time. Liberation Theology took up the torch shortly thereafter. Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) provided its palingenesist evolutionism a further biological-spiritual support. Triumphant Americanist Pluralism, with its exaltation of thoughtless action, has served as an effective ally, and a seemingly all-conquering one since 1945. Each time the Mennaisien spirit returns, it announces itself to be strikingly new, startlingly energetic, invincible, and yet, predictably, the humble victim of persecuting forces. Every time it appears, it raises the banner of the primacy of the Spirit, and proceeds to reduce the Christian mission to a set of pressing political imperatives. Over and over again, it insists that it is ushering in an age of Christian victory and Catholic freedom, though the greater its successes, the less there is anything distinctly Christian about it, and the more that the very word Catholic tends to disappear entirely from its lexicon.

Many of the proponents of the faith of Lamennais, like Lamennais himself [has was the case with Chesterton], have been exceedingly gifted men with valid criticisms of Church life, and imaginative, workable solutions to specific problems. They, like Lamennais, have thus drawn serious Catholics into their orbit. And once within it, the creed that they oblige everyone to profess in the energetic People, the Prophet who must rouse it from its lethargy, and the forcible witness that it is then compelled to give to a "spontaneously" emerging, universalist Christian culture poisons all that they do. Stop for a moment of silence, ask Jesus Christ what He want you to do next. In this silence remember God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost - Three Divine Persons yet One God, has an ordered universe where you can know truth and falsehood as well as never forget that He wants you to have eternal happiness with Him as his son or daughter by grace. Make this a practice. By doing this you are doing more good than reading anything here or anywhere else on the Internet.

Francis Notes:

- Doctor of the Church St. Francis de Sales totally confirmed beyond any doubt the possibility of a heretical pope and what must be done by the Church in such a situation:

"[T]he Pope... WHEN he is EXPLICITLY a heretic, he falls ipso facto from his dignity and out of the Church, and the Church MUST either deprive him, or, as some say, declare him deprived, of his Apostolic See."
(The Catholic Controversy, by St. Francis de Sales, Pages 305-306)

Saint Robert Bellarmine, also, said "the Pope heretic is not deposed ipso facto, but must be declared deposed by the Church."
