Watching coverage of the recent Fauci hearings, during which the high-profile "Renaissance Man" reportedly took the Fifth more than 100 times, a Catholic cannot help but compare his behavior with that of Marko Rupnik, and the behavior of his attorney who was removed by security with that of Bergoglio and Prevost.  The tactics employed in defense of the indefensible are not just similar; they are  identical.  That's the funny thing--isn't it?--about those who downplay or reject the reality of the supernatural.  As C. S. Lewis, among others, has pointed out, men like this don't end up affirming the empirical; paradoxically, they become poster boys for the notion that there is something "below" the natural order as such.  It is not only faith, but also the facts themselves, to which they have become psychologically and spiritually impervious, with thought-provoking results.

How pathetic our shepherds seem, when even some of our secular representatives demonstrate an integrity for which most members of the hierarchy do not even seem to be striving.  Why isn't Marko Rupnik having his feet held to the fire, equally and much more so, when Fauci's depredations concern bodies and Rupnik's, also souls?   As Catholics, we believe in faith and reason; the handful of clerics still standing up for the former increasingly insist that we set aside the latter.  Yes, we must pray, but prayer has never been understood as a substitute for the truth or an excuse for ignoring it, culpably.

"The Vatican Still Hasn't Learned How to Deal With Abuse Allegations," opines a recent Crux headline.  Hasn't it?  The headline assumes good faith where none is really in evidence.  In fact, the last two occupants of the papal office have handled all sorts of doctrinal and behavioral inconveniences with what can only be described as narcissistic panache, according to a contemptible playbook that is increasingly unmistakable.  In America, we call it "taking the Fifth:" in Rome, not answering the Dubia and stonewalling the canon lawyer of Rupnik's targets.  Not that there isn't a time and place for invoking one's Constitutional rights, or for exercising the ecclesiastical authority which certain of its claimants appear so anxious to deform or to discard in other contexts.  There is a  difference, however, between acting justly and perverting the course of justice by means of the mechanisms meant to facilitate it.  For indeed the Constitution, to someone like "America's" former "Doctor," is nothing but a mechanism, as is the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church to those who regard Her as such.

As of this writing, Rand Paul is predicting that Anthony Fauci will be held in contempt of Congress.  How much more pernicious is the offense of showing an identical species of contempt for God?  This goes not only for the ones doing the calculated obfuscation but also for the ones shielding themselves behind the overtly specious claim that there is nothing a Cardinal, an Archbishop, a Bishop, an Auxiliary Bishop, a Monsignor, a Priest, a Deacon, a Religious, a Qualified Layman, an Unqualified Layman, or anybody else can do about it--not even, the acknowledgment of the evidence of their own eyes and ears, let alone the immutable content of the Deposit of Faith.

Enough is enough.  As Father Gerald Murray indicated on a recent episode of the "Prayerful Posse," it doesn't cut it, anymore, for the Vatican to smile, 'Trust Us!" in cases like Marko Rupnik's.  Let's start holding our shepherds to the same standards as our Congressmen, of the actual requirements of their supernatural responsibilities really are (as they can't be, for God's grace is sufficient for us) "too much" for them  at the very moment the Church needs them the most.
