In the wake of the recent peace agreements in the Middle East, over at Lifesite people are debating whether or not the Trump administration had any right to tell Pope Leo to take his sophomoric rhetoric and shove it.  Catholic influencers are virtue signalling in droves that they support the American President no longer--influencers who wouldn't listen when cautioned against jumping unreservedly on the MAGA bandwagon in the first place.  Erudite comboxers note that Napoleon, too, wanted to know how many legions the Pope has--a fair parallel, if the government did indeed reflect the attitude that America can do "whatever we want."

The real issue for serious Catholics, however, is the flipside of the same coin.  The infinitely more perilous problem is that we have (once again) an occupant of the Chair of Peter who thinks the same way.

If a country possessing military prowess cannot, morally speaking, do whatever it wants, can the Vatican itself?  The underlying conviction of those presently, and in certain respects justifiably, criticizing Donald Trump is that people in authority may not exercise that authority indiscriminately; there are the demands of human, natural, and divine law to be taken into prudential consideration.  As the old saying goes, might does not make right.

Robert Prevost as Pope Leo, like Jorge Bergoglio as Pope Francis before him, exercises authority of a different kind, but that does not mean he can exercise it indiscriminately, either.  The same Catholic influencers crowing against the POTUS shrink into servile obedience when confronted with lawlessness from the loggia, discrediting themselves in the process.  Bishop Strickland, for instance, lapses again into overt self-contradiction; still evincing Stockholm Syndrome over his own uncanonical removal on the grounds that popes can do whatever they want, His Exvellency now considers himself a credible spokesman against the excesses of the White House. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Catholic influencers, in other words, can't have their cake and eat it too.  Either the submission of mind and will to Almighty God is to be brought to bear not only personally but also civilizationally, or it isn't.  Either those in authority must hold themselves (or be held) accountable to the human, natural, and divine law without exception, or there can be no mention of accountability at all. What is wrong for Donald Trump cannot be reconstituted as right for Robert Prevost.  While "Amoris laetitia" stands, the representatives of the one true Church have no claim to be regarded with a straight face when they express their evangelically unhinged opinions about pretty much anything else.
