Socci: Benedict XVI told Cd. Brandmuller he didn't want to be "seen [as] the Ex-Pope"

Antonio Socci in his book uses quotes to show that Benedict XVI, in his two letters responded to Cardinal Walter Brandmuller's criticism of the title "pope emeritus," saying he didn't want to be a cardinal because he would be "seen [as] the ex-pope."

Brandmuller wrote Benedict that the title "pope emeritus" happened to be "extraneous to the entire canonical-theological traditional."

Benedict according to Socci "expresses concern [to Brandmuller in the letters] had he returned to being a cardinal, 'in that cardinal would have been seen the ex-pope,' thus creating confusion."

Simply put Socci presents the case that if Benedict doesn't want to be seen as the "ex-pope" then he wants to be seen as the pope which brings us back to the "question of the validity of a dubious or partial resignation."

The interesting thing to note here is Ratzinger's implicit subjectivism. Challenged by a Cardinal about his own creation "ex nihilo" of such a thing as a "Pope emeritus," BXVI attempts no defense, as if nothing beyond mere assertion would suffice. His attitude contrasts with that of Bergoglio, who deliberately clubs people over the head with Peter's keys in a kind of "l'eglise, c'est moi!". Ratzinger, equally disturbingly, fails to hold himself accountable at all, if in a flipside-of-the-same-coin kind of way. His approach is reminiscent of the theological error of the divorced-and-civilly-remarried-without-an-annulment spouse, who figures that if I got myself into this thing, I can just as freely get myself out. The lack of any supernatural impingement on the thinking of a man widely reputed to be one of the greatest theologians of our age is breathtaking at best.

Benedict XVI used canonically perfect means, which are found in the current Code of Canon Law of 1983, to demonstrate the nullity of Bergoglio's pontificate. He left the king naked. But if many do not understand what line of reasoning is this of Ratzinger's so-called "Pope Emeritus", then it will be their stumbling block on the day of judgment. Meanwhile the Church is now descending to Jerusalem: the Vicar of Christ died being faithful to the Cross; the many disciples betray, deny and flee for it. But the Church will rise again in this way.
